Explanation of the terms Electronic Data Interchange

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) refers to the transmission of standard economic information through communication networks in accordance with a set of common standard formats specified in the same regulations, and the exchange and automatic processing of data between the electronic computer systems of trading partners.

EDI users need to send messages in accordance with the internationally accepted message format, and the receiver also needs to process the messages according to the internationally unified grammar rules, and cause EDI comprehensive processing by other related systems. This information exchange process is automated, eliminating the need for human intervention, reducing errors and increasing efficiency.

An EDI message consists of a string of multiple data elements, each representing a single fact, such as a price and a model number, separated by a separator. The entire string is referred to as a data segment. One or more data segments are defined by head and tail limits as a set of transactions, which is the EDI transmission unit (equivalent to a piece of information).
