 What does mu-mimo mean

MU-MIMO, short for "Multi-User Multiple-Input Multiple-Output", is a technology that allows your router to communicate with multiple devices at the same time, and it is a milestone in the second phase of the 802.11ac standard.

The main purpose of MU-MIMO is to improve the efficiency of WiFi networks and improve network resource utilization. In the MU-MIMO system, the data of the user group occupies the same time-frequency resources, that is, the data of the user group is transmitted on the same subcarrier, which can effectively improve the system throughput.

MU-MIMO can be divided into uplink MU-MIMO and downlink MU-MIMO:

1. Uplink MU-MIMO: Different users use the same time-frequency resources for uplink transmission (single-antenna transmission), and from the receiving end, these data streams can be regarded as different antennas from a user terminal, thus constituting a virtual MIMO system.

2. Downlink MU-MIMO: Transmit multiple data streams to different user terminals, and multiple user terminals and eNBs form a downlink MU-MIMO system; The downlink MU-MIMO can separate the data streams transmitted to different users at the receiving end by eliminating/eliminating the trap. Downlink MU-MIMO can also simplify operations at the receiver by using beamforming at the transmitter end to separate the data streams of different users in advance.
